Adrift on the Nile (1971)
|
Source: www.imdb.com Directed by Hussein Kamal. With Adel Adham, Mervat Amin, Magda El-Khatib, Imad Hamdi. ** Tomorrow, Monday November 22nd, 2010 @ 06:30 pm The French Cultural Center (Mounira) CFCC Egypte (groupe) will screen the film "Chitchat on the Nile (Adrift on the Nile) -ثرثرة فوق النيل" based on a novel by Naguib Mahfouz (with the same title)
The film is a "Must-See" coz simply it portrays exactly the SHIT that Egypt is goin' through at the very moment!! mind you that this novel was written in 1966!! ;)
A complex of odd yet very interestin' stories of eight people who meet almost every night to do drugs (Hasheesh) in order to escape from the painful realities they are livin' everyday.
Then comes "Samaara" tryin' to pull them out of this shit... but!!! ;))
The film has a tight bunch of great Egyptian actors/actresses @ that time... Emad Hamdi, Magda El Khateeb, Ahmad Ramzi, Adel Adham, Sohier Ramzy, Salah Nazmi, Ahmad Tawfeeq, Neaamat Mokhtaar and Mervat Ameen!! wow :)
What's so unique about the film is that it's all in Black and White (produced 1971) except with one musical performance by Ahmad Ramzi!! =)
The film is part of a series of films around the theme "Water/the Nile" Celebratin' "Le Mois Du Film Documentaire" the Documentary Film Month in France :)
Hope u can see the film tomorrow it's a very interestin' one! ;)

10 Facts on Mental Health | WHO
|
Source: www.who.int from the World Health Organization (WHO) ** These are interestin' facts concernin' Mental Health... since that October 10th marks the World Mental Health Day!
It's too funny that developin' countries has high rates of mental disorders, yet people in these countries try as much as possible to deny the importance of psychiatry or seekin' professional help!
In Egypt... there are high rates of depression (I believe). But I'm not very sure about suicide rates!!! since there are not any clear statistics for that (or even for depression)!!
The first fact is so alertin'... "Most low- and middle-income countries have only one child psychiatrist for every 1 to 4 million people"!!!!!
Fahmy (Fahmy Bahgat)... could u plz provide us with more concrete statistics (if any are available)?!
Finally, I'm wishin' everyone a Happy Mental Health Day! ;))

You save on the car payments and fuel costs, of course, but also on insurance, parking, and maintenance. To compensate, you can walk, cycle, take various... ** Woooooooooooooow... that's what you can call a true win-win deal! =)) And I guess that Cairo should (highly) consider adoptin' a similar system (life-style)!! ;))
Care2 shared this very interestin' article by Planet Green about Hoboken's (New Jersy) new-program "Surrender Your Permit" that encourages its citizens to go Car-Free!! =))
The city has come up with lots of programs and initiatives to help those who use cars occasionally, sufferin' from those annoyin' car bills (maintenance, oil/gas...) or have a tendency to live Environmentally-Friendly... gettin' rid of their cars and start adaptin' their life-styles to new alternatives! ;)))
Among the programs launched...
* CornerCars: A CarSharin' program - for those who use cars occasionally or just bein' interested in gettin' rid of their cars and live more Environmentally-Friendly :D - which offers them the opportunity of usin' cars on rental-basis (almost 5-16$/hour... amazin'!) and they can easily found those cars around the block!!
* The Hop: (coz you can easily “Hop-on" and "Hop-off" the bus :D) A community shuttle-bus service which is available within two blocks of almost every resident!
* A package of benefits that is $500 worth for all of those who "Surrender Their Permit"! ;)
Check out the article to get more details about the program!
Well, this article reminded me of my - poor :P :D - friend Kareem Osman who recently has adapted to a more Environmentally-Friendly Lifestyle which is Biking =)))
The poor Kareem has to bike everyday to work from Maadi to Agouza (and back)... needless to mention the daily struggles Kareem has to go through with our crazy Cairene traffic! 3eshta zokhran lel watan ya Kareem :P ;))
Guyz, Mind you that Hoboken (New Jersy) has a population of around 40.000 and they were havin' traffic and parkin' issues!!

Source: www.google.org ** Yesterday... Monday | September 27th, 2010
Google Arabia held a public session @ the 57357 Children's Cancer Hospital (Cairo, Egypt) to introduce the project "Health Speaks" Arabic!
The project is very promisin' and it simply aims at increasin' the amount of quality health information available online in local languages. The project is focused on Arabic, Hindi and Swahili languages at this stage.
So "Health Speaks" is an Online voluntary and community-based project and the efforts of volunteers is what makes the project possible!
But let me tell you guyz that the translation part has to be done by people of Medical-academic background as to ensure the accuracy of information in the translated articles! :))
And the project is based on two Online tools... Google Translate and Wikipedia. So volunteers have to have (or create new) Google and Wikipedia accounts to contribute to the project.
There are around 900 articles that need to be translated in 32 days!! and if all articles are finished before the deadline... 57357 Hospital will receive a donation of $US 50,000 from Google
So Hurry up Guyz and spread the word among your friends who are of medical-academic backgrounds ;))

Générik Vapeur - Jamais 203
|
Source: vimeo.com ** Postin' earlier about Samenakoa brought to mind some good old memories of that day I saw 'em performin' live! It was in Salon-de-Provence @ the festival "La Folle Histoire des Arts de la Rue".
But right before Samenakoa there was a very KOOL street performance by the street-theatre company "Générik Vapeur"!
Let me tell u that this was one of the most exciting experiences of a live performance I've ever had - till the very moment ;)
It was a mobile street-performance!! :) Mobile... in the sense that the whole performance (performers, stage and the audience) where moving from one place to another!!
It was real great to go thru such an experience... if you happen to watch the video u'll get what I mean ;)
* A very BIG "Thank You" goes to Claudine =))) since it was her who suggested that we (Hadil & myself) join her for this amazin' festival =)))
One other big "Thank You" goes to Francoise - for the ride... he was always there whenever we needed a lift to go outside Marseille ...

International Literacy Day (8 September): UNESCO launches new Knowledge and Innovations Network for.
|
Source: www.unesco.org In addition, UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova will be in New York to give a keynote address at the international conference “Literacy: an essential foundation for development” at the United Nations. The opening address will be given by former First Lady of the United States Laura Bush, who is ... ** Another funny story... but from the UNESCO this time! :-/
September 8th is marked as the International Literacy Day and I really wanted to share the website for the "Knowledge and Innovations Network for Literacy (KINL)"
a new project initiated by the UNESCO for this Year's International Literacy Day theme which is "Literacy and Women's Empowerment"
which is a real important issue for a developing country like Egypt! it's terrible to know that there are lots of kids (a high percentage of them are girls) are out of school - haven't been to schools in the first place :(
apart from the fact that the Egyptian Educational System is totally fucked-up but still kidz MUST get some education (I prefer to call it knowledge :D) in this country!!
And I think that Education has to be Obligatory!! like the Military service!! :D
It's very true that a well-educated MOTHER is a great gift for her community!! =)))
It's funny that it was mentioned - thru this press release - that Egypt Literacy Program has been awarded the Confucius prize!
We are still fightin' illiteracy (readin' and writin') while we should go for Digital Literacy (specially with those @ an early age!)
yalla ma3aliena ;))
aah... OK back to the funny story of the UNESCO... the International Literacy Day was September and it was claimed that the "Knowledge and Innovations Network for Literacy (KINL)" project was about to be launched the same date!
but it's funny that they mentioned on this press release that the network will be functional as of NOVEMBER 1st!!!!!!
I think that the UNESCO has a serious issue with deadlines ;))) I thought that it was Egypt only that has this problem!! :P :)))
I mean why didn't they get the website ready and functionin' on September 8th!!!
And aah did I mention that Microsoft is the technology partner for the Project!!! I guess now it's very clear why the actual-launch was delayed!!! :P ;))))

Fixing some issues with your Facebook Pages!
|
Source: www.facebook.com ** Here's my (long-awaited :P :P) work-out for some Facebook Pages not bein' accessible in some countries!!
So after encounterin' the issue of the UN Year of Youth Facebook page - mentioned in my last post - I thought there must be somethin' wrong with the page configuration and settings!
So I created a (test) Facebook Page Zaha2 NON-Profit Egypt :))) and I started foolin' around with the settings to see what could be the problem and here's what I came up with :))
So for all of you page-admins out there havin' issues with ur FB page not bein' available in some countries... get a pen and paper and write down the followin' steps :P or just read thru and follow them :P =))
1- Go to the Facebook page with the problem (not bein' accessible by everyone)!
2- Click the "Edit Page" link on ur top-left - under the profile picture of the page (for those who are using FB in English)
3- And then... under the "Settings" section. Click "Edit"
4- The first option is "Country Restrictions" which is the main reason for this problem
Please leave it empty, because ONLY people from this country (that you will add in the box) will be able to see the page!! others will not be able to access it AT ALL!!
Which is the case with the UN Year of Youth page?! they set the "Country Restrictions" to "United States"!!!
And guyz try always to read and check out the tool-tips - ? or "What is this?" - next to each of the settings - it's there for a REASON ;P ;D
and the followin' is an example... it's for what the "Country Restrictions" option is?!
it reads
"Entering one or more countries means that only people located in those countries listed will be able to view your Page. This also means that logged out users will not be able to see your Page. If no countries are listed, your Page will be visible to people located in all countries. You understand that you are responsible for setting the proper country restrictions to ensure that the content of your Page is appropriate for the country or countries where you allow it to be visible."
and of course you can fool-around with the other settings to see what they can change on the page!
yalla best of luck :P ;)))
Eman Jaradat... I hope this could be of some help to ur cousin's page issue ;)

Two kids rescuing a puppy from the water - The Daily Tail
|
Source: www.thedailytail.com Some people don’t go out of their way to help others. Others do. One of our readers sent me these pictures featuring two kids rescuing a puppy from the water. * That's amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazin' =)))
These two kids are so sweet :)) You have to see the photos to know what they did to save this puppy :))
It's very touchin' to see those lil kidz tryin' their best to save the lil puppy... I always say "Kidz give me Hope for a better tomorrow!" =))
When u check out the page you'll see a conversation (readers' comments) about this incident... one of the most interestin' comments was this one :)
"Probably we will never hear about them again... We can only pray or desire very strongly that they are happy, safe and with health... They surely deserve it!!!" Marcia Amaral
She's absolutely right... no one knows who those kidz are and the kidz themselves may never know about those photos bein' published!! But the (great) inspiration they gave to lots of people is invaluable =)) god bless them both :))
And if u have the time to go thru all of the comments... u'll see how some stupid assholes think that the photos are bein' fake or that the k...
