“Cairo – URBANreVIEWS”
a joint project between ifa galleries and the Townhouse Gallery. The ifa galleries exhibition was previously shown in Stuttgart and Berlin and will open in Cairo with the addition of five Egyptian artists responding to the urban spaces presented.
The exhibition "Cairo – URBANreVIEWS" focuses on various aspects of the city’s current state, presenting succinct surveys of past developments, subjective experiences of present everyday life in the mega-city, as well as visions of the city in the 21st century. Part of it are plans for the New Cairo City, the joint development project by the GTZ and the Cairo City Authorities for the informal settlement of Manshiet Nasser, Al-Azhar Park and the revitalization program for Darb Al-Ahmar by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the competition for the new Grand Egyptian Museum, which is to be moved from the city centre to a site by the pyramids.
In this context dealing with their impressions /understanding of the public and individual spaces in Cairo are the photography works of Randa Shaath, Heba Farid, Osama Dawod, Rana El Nemr and video work by Hala El Koussy. The young Egyptian artists and photographers open up new perspectives in terms of method and intent.
While the exhibition is taking place, the Goethe Institute in Cairo and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture will hold discussions on the views expressed by artists, urban designers and architects on the city in which they live and work, which they observe, experience and ‘process’ artistically or architecturally and, finally, on how they envisage the future of Cairo.
This exhibition and accompanying panels are made possible with the support of ifa Germany, the Goethe Institute Cairo, GTZ and Aga Khan Trust for Culture.
